The second-oldest marathon in Spain, presented this morning at the Donostia City Hall, was attended by&nbsp;<strong>Joan Giralt<\/strong>&nbsp;(Zurich&#8217;s representative),&nbsp;<strong>Ram\u00f3n Goikoetxea<\/strong>&nbsp;(President of the Gipuzkoa Athletics Federation),&nbsp;<strong>Azahara Dominguez<\/strong>&nbsp;(Regional Councillor for Mobility, Tourism and Territorial Planning),&nbsp;<strong>Goizane \u00c1lvarez<\/strong>&nbsp;(Regional Councillor for Culture and Sports),&nbsp;<strong>I\u00f1aki Gabarain<\/strong>&nbsp;(Sports Councillor of the San Sebasti\u00e1n City Council) and&nbsp;<strong>Eneko Goia<\/strong>&nbsp;(Donostiako Alkatea). The race will have&nbsp;<strong>7,500 participants<\/strong>, having sold out the bibs for its three distances three weeks before the race and with a record number of participants in the main distance: 3,500 in the 42K, 2,000 in the half marathon and 2,000 for the 10K.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Besides, Donostia&#8217;s Marathon will be the first one in the<a href=\"https:\/\/zurichmaratonsansebastian.com\/en\/zurich-seguros-creates-las-5-grandes-circuit-with-the-best-marathons-in-the-country-among-them-the-zurich-maraton-san-sebastian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Zurich Las 5 Grandes circuit<\/a>, an initiative that groups together the main marathons in the country: Zurich Marat\u00f3 Barcelona, Zurich Rock&#8217;n&#8217;Roll Running Series Madrid, Zurich Marat\u00f3n San Sebasti\u00e1n, Zurich Marat\u00f3n Sevilla and Marat\u00f3n Valencia Trinidad Alfonso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This marathon will have&nbsp;<strong>28% female participation (2,026 women) and 44% of international participants (3,239), representing 60 different nationalities.<\/strong>&nbsp;Likewise, this 45th edition will count on two athletes for what will be their 100th marathon:&nbsp;<strong>Romain Purro<\/strong>, a Swiss athlete who has been living in San Sebasti\u00e1n for 10 years and who has already run the 42 kilometres in San Sebasti\u00e1n 13 times; and&nbsp;<strong>Jose Mar\u00eda Garc\u00eda Cosgaya<\/strong>, an athlete from Vitoria who ran his first marathon in San Sebasti\u00e1n in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><em>&#8220;This year we are celebrating the 45th edition of the Z<\/em><em><strong>urich Marat\u00f3n Donostia-San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/strong><\/em><em>\u00a0and we are doing it in great shape, with admirable participation figures and being a protagonist of Las 5 Grandes circuit together with the most important marathons in Spain. Proof of this is the fact that t<strong>he 40% of the marathon participants have chosen a pace of less than 3 hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 3 races&nbsp;<strong>start from Calle Hernani<\/strong>, located in the heart of the city center, and finish on the mythical Boulevard, a place that has hosted historic stage finishes of the Tour de France, the Cl\u00e1sica San Sebasti\u00e1n, or the popular Behobia-San Sebasti\u00e1n. The race crosses the city centre, Antiguo, Amara, Riberas de Loiola and Gros, passing through emblematic places of the city such as the Paseo de la Concha, the Vitoria Eugenia Theatre, the Buen Pastor Cathedral, the Kursaal and the Plaza Gipuzkoa. To finish, a magnificent straight of more than 1 kilometre completely flat to the finish line is enjoyed, surrounded by the warmth of the Gipuzkoan public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>After breaking the record of the race in the women&#8217;s category in 2022, the organisation&#8217;s objective this year is to do the same in the men&#8217;s category. Last year it was the Kenyan athlete&nbsp;<strong>Rebecca Sirwanei Taniu<\/strong>, who, with a time of 2:23:94h, pulverised the record of the Spanish athlete&nbsp;<strong>Ana Isabel Alonso<\/strong>, which had been in force for 27 years. The elite line-up for this 45th edition is made up of international athletes with fast times:&nbsp;<strong>Kenyan Benson Tunyo Murkomen<\/strong>&nbsp;starts as the favourite, with a time of 2h11&#8242;, followed by his compatriots&nbsp;<strong>Moses Kimulwo Tuyange<\/strong>&nbsp;(2h12&#8242;),&nbsp;<strong>Geoffrey Yego<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Kelvin Kimutai Maru<\/strong>, who are making their debut in the distance, together with Slovenian&nbsp;<strong>Matic Modic<\/strong>&nbsp;(2h25&#8242;). In the women&#8217;s category, two Kenyan runners,&nbsp;<strong>Leah Jerotich<\/strong>&nbsp;(2h32&#8242;) and&nbsp;<strong>Emmah Cheruto Nwida<\/strong>&nbsp;(2h35&#8242;) are the favourites to reach the podium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>On the same Sunday,\u00a0<strong>the Gipuzkoa and Euskadi Marathon Championships will also be held<\/strong>, in which more than thirty participants have registered, including Francisco Javier Menta Mart\u00ednez, Mikel Mujika and Juan Luis Manso in the men&#8217;s category, and Ana Cruz Oyarzabal, Alazne Mujika, Nerea Eg\u00eda and Miren Josune Biku\u00f1a in the women&#8217;s category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/zurichmaratonsansebastian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/655c95b3a2c43fddc7fc505c-1024x559.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7973\" srcset=\"https:\/\/zurichmaratonsansebastian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/655c95b3a2c43fddc7fc505c-1024x559.png 1024w, https:\/\/zurichmaratonsansebastian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/655c95b3a2c43fddc7fc505c-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/zurichmaratonsansebastian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/655c95b3a2c43fddc7fc505c-768x419.png 768w, https:\/\/zurichmaratonsansebastian.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/655c95b3a2c43fddc7fc505c.png 1222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Runner&#8217;s Fair, refreshment points and more services<\/strong><br>The&nbsp;<strong>Kursaal Conference Centre<\/strong>&nbsp;will once again be the nerve centre of the race on the day before the&nbsp;<strong>Zurich Marat\u00f3n Donostia-San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/strong>. The Runner&#8217;s Fair (Expo Sports) will have numerous stands dedicated to the world of sport. On this occasion, the following brands will be present: Zurich Seguros, Finisher, Corny, Yamaha, Zurich Marat\u00f3 Barcelona and eDreams Mitja Marat\u00f3 Barcelona by Brooks, Pimiento Negro and Marat\u00f3n de Sevilla. Participants will be able to pick up their race bibs and commemorative T-shirts at the same venue throughout&nbsp;<strong>Saturday, 25th November between 10am and 8pm, without interruption.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The&nbsp;<strong>Zurich Marat\u00f3n Donostia-San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/strong>&nbsp;will have a total of<strong>&nbsp;9 refreshment points<\/strong>&nbsp;with water, fruit, Finisher gels and Powerade, and another complete refreshment point at the finish line where there will also be broth, pizzas and more. There will also be a cloakroom service, free shuttle buses from different parts of the city to the start, showers, medal recording, recovery area with masseurs, online diploma, etc&#8230; Each participant will receive a T-shirt as a gift, and those who finish the Marathon and Half Marathon will also receive a commemorative medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>To minimise the impact of this great event on the environment, the organisers have made a major effort to reduce waste generation as much as possible. Electric cars and motorbikes will be used, T-shirts will come without plastic bags and will be made from recycled fabrics, and more than half of the refreshment posts will use water from the public water supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>More than 500 volunteers<\/strong><br>More than 500 volunteers will take part in the race and will carry out different tasks such as giving out bib numbers, cutting off traffic, providing refreshments, providing entertainment and handing out medals to all the participants who finish the race. Most of these volunteers belong to the different athletics clubs in Gipuzkoa, and they are essential to be able to hold an event of this magnitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Follow the race: APP, YouTube and ETB4 Live<\/strong><br>The race&#8217;s APP will be very useful to be informed about the most relevant aspects of the race. On Sunday itself, it will be possible to follow the participants live by entering the bib number of each runner. Available for IOS and Android.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Euskal Telebista will broadcast the race live from 9am on ETB4 and on eitb.eus. El Diario Vasco will also broadcast the race live on its website. Its ambassador of the Zurich &#8216;<em>De Pies A Cabeza&#8217;<\/em>&nbsp;Community of runners,&nbsp;<strong>Abel Ant\u00f3n<\/strong>, will be animating the training and will share his advice with the participants. A 7km circuit through the impressive Concha Bay, up to the Peine del Viento to finish at the same starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>On the other hand,&nbsp;<strong>the Z Zurich Foundation will donate 1 euro for each finisher of the Zurich Marat\u00f3n Donostia-San Sebasti\u00e1n 2023<\/strong>&nbsp;in each of its distances, the final amount of which will be donated to the Spanish Federation of Food Banks. Similarly, the Zurich Aefat Team will hold its 25th marathon in San Sebasti\u00e1n, fighting for ataxia telangiectasia. This team, created in 2017, is made up of children and young people with this degenerative disease, still without a cure or treatment, and volunteer runners who push their special chairs, all of them from different parts of Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The Zurich Aefat Team will be presented this Saturday 25 November at 11am at the Zurich stand at Expo Sports. These young people, from different communities, aged between 15 and just over 30, will be representing the more than 40 people affected by ataxia telangiectasia who are part of Aefat, the association that brings together families in Spain: Jon, from Vitoria-Gasteiz; the twins B\u00e1rbara and Adri\u00e1n (Burgos), the brothers \u00c1lvaro and Luis-Ill\u00e1n (Terrassa, Barcelona), Sara (Madrid) and Lola (Barcelona). Other families travelling to cheer on the team will also be present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Their special chairs will be pushed by 23 great solidarity runners from \u00c1lava, Vizcaya, Navarra, Huesca, Barcelona, Madrid and the United Kingdom, among them Kepa, father of one of the children affected in \u00c1lava. The team&#8217;s flag bearer will be Abel Fern\u00e1ndez Mendivil, known as SpiderAbel, a runner from Amurrio (\u00c1lava) who has been running almost 100 marathons in his Spider-Man suit and has been loyal to the association for several years.
