The Zurich Maratón San Sebastián‘s progression in terms of participation numbers over the last few editions has made headlines. The great popular athletics festival in Donostia has already surpassed 50% of its capacity for the main distance of 42.195 kilometres.
More than 1,650 Marathon runners have already purchased their bib number for the 26th of November. At the same time, the growth in the other two formats available in this race at this point compared to last year has increased by 35% in the half-marathon, with 600 registered runners, and by 110% in the 10K, with more than 325 runners, when it is expected that the most significant increase in participation in these two shorter distances will take place after the summer.
Therefore, the Zurich Maratón San Sebastián 2023 has already surpassed 2,500 registrations, when there are still more than five months to go until the big day. These numbers are very encouraging to fulfil the forecasts for the 45th anniversary of this race by reaching 7,000 registered runners among the three distances. Last year, the total number of participants was 6,113, almost tripling the number of 2021 participants (2,627).
A marathon that is growing among the locals and internationally
Likewise, the circuit with whom the Zurich Maratón San Sebastián debuted last year has convinced local runners. In last year’s edition, the number of runners from Gipuzkoa was 20% and for this 45th edition it is 26.5%, more than five points higher. Also in 2022, this race attracted 40% of foreign participants and 61 different nationalities – mainly from France and the United Kingdom – from up to five continents, making the race grow internationally without forgetting its roots.
Furthermore, the total female participation grew from 21.95% in 2021 to 25% in 2022. It is also worth mentioning that at last year’s Zurich Maratón San Sebastián, Kenyan runner Rebbeca Sirwanei Tanui set the new women’s course record in 02:23:09h. A time that was the third-best time achieved in 2022 in a national marathon, and that corroborates that the route of the Donostia Marathon is both, fast and monumental.
