EcoMarathon

Minimising its environmental footprint is one of the Zurich Maratón San Sebastián's top priorities. We want our big celebration of sport to be a show of love for the city, the people who live in it and the environment, so we are taking concrete measures to make the Zurich Maratón San Sebastián a sustainable race.

Runners will get sustainable T-shirts. ASICS has had a strong commitment to the environment and set itself ambitious goals to protect nature ever since it came to life in Japan in 1949. This is why the T-shirts given to participants in the race will be made of 100% recycled polyester fabric.

Cobega recycles the Powerade bottles handed out to the runners at the refreshment stations, which get a second life as tape-on clips used to attach race numbers to the T-shirts of the runners, making safety pins redundant. Specifically, Coca-Cola is working towards its goal of collecting an amount equivalent to 100% of its bottles to make sure not a single one of them ends up littering our streets, let alone our oceans.

In order to facilitate recycling and waste sorting along the course of the Zurich Marató Barcelona, clean-up measures will be beefed up with:

  • 19 large containers for cardboard
  • 85 large containers for plastic
  • 18 large containers for organic waste
  • 18 large containers for rubbish
  • 100 cardboard bins

Remember: yellow is for plastic, blue is for paper and green is for glass.

Everything can be recycled and you will find recycling bins at almost every corner. You can also recycle all sorts of materials at your local green point.

Electric support vehicles are another important piece of the puzzle. The Hyundai NEXO, a hydrogen-powered car that was already chosen to open the road and carry the timer of the race in the previous edition of the Zurich Marató Barcelona, is an example of this. It emits nothing but water vapour and cleans the air as it moves around. It represents the flagship of Hyundai's efforts to develop environmentally friendly technologies.

Cardboard boxes will be placed near the start line for participants to drop off any clothes that are no longer needed and can be given to charity.

We are focused on calculating and reducing our carbon footprint, i.e. the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the trips of the participants and the organisation of the race. Its impact can be minimised by supporting certified renewable power or forest conservation projects with a social dimension.

Promoting public transport

San Sebastián boasts an extensive public transport network, so you can hop onto the metro, a bus or a train to get anywhere.

Here are the various options for travelling to the start/finish area of the Zurich Maratón San Sebastián using public transport.
